The Algarve
The Algarve is the most southern point of
Portugal with sun-clad beaches and Mediterranean climate making it a highly popular holiday destination. The coast line is famous for its limestone caves and grottos. The countryside is hilly with rich valleys with the highest point being the mountain range of Monchique, which has a maximum altitude of 906m (Peak of the Fóia).
One of the attractions of this area is the Ria Formosa Lagoon which is a nature reserve covering over 170 kilometers. This is a stopping place for hundreds of birds including the Greater Flamingo.
