Bassas da India - The Indian Ocean
Bassas da India is an uninhabited atoll situated in the southern Mozambique Channel approximately half-way between Madagascar and Mozambique. The Mozambique Channel is a portion of the
Indian Ocean.
Bassas da India is a volcanic rock surrounded by reefs and is awash at high tide. The atoll has been owned by the French since 1897.
The atoll consists of ten barren rocky islets, with no vegetation. The reef is completely covered by the sea from three hours before until three hours after high tide. The region is often prone to cyclones and has long been a maritime hazard. There are a number of shipwrecks in the area.
