The Caribbean
The Caribbean stretches from the Southern Florida to the coast of Venezuela. It has more than 7000 islands. Popular destinations are Mexico and the West Indies. The West Indies consist of three main island groups,
Bahamas (North),
Greater Antilles (Central) and the
Lesser Antilles (South East).
Christopher Columbus named the islands the Indies after landing in the Bahamas. This was because he thought he had landed in Asia and the East Indies.
The islands of the Caribbean have close cultural ties with Europe, Africa and Asia. It's sub-tropical and tropical climate makes it a popular holiday destination although it is still possible to find an idyllic island which is unspoilt.
